There have been cry for justice for Chimamanda Adichie son as he was rushed to Euracare Hospital on January 6 conscious, interactive and with stable vital signs, however later died due to negligence.

He was there for three procedures which include an MRI scan, a PICC line insertion and a lumbar puncture. The plan was to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States the very next day. However, in less than 24 hours later he was dead.

His father, Dr Ivara Esege has carried those facts inside him for five months. Now he has decided to speak.

Dr Esege Says Euracare Is Using Wealth and Power to Block the Truth

Dr Ivara Esege, the husband of celebrated author Chimamanda Adichie, has declared that his family will not relent until justice is served over the death of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Adichie-Esege which has led to justice for Chimamanda Adichie Son.

Nkanu’s father has accused the hospital of trying to obstruct a judicial inquest into the circumstances of the tragedy. He detailed the family’s grief and frustration over the handling of their 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi’s death on January 7, 2026, at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.

He said ‘We are waiting and hoping that Euracare will not be able to use its wealth and power to stop an inquest. It has been a nightmare dealing with Euracare while keeping life as normal as possible for our daughter and for Nkanu’s twin brother and trying to protect my wife from much of this upheaval.’

Chimamanda Adichie’s husband says Euracare refused to hand over their son’s medical records and is now fighting to stop a public inquest that could expose what happened.

According to Dr Esege, his son arrived at Euracare conscious, interactive, and with stable vital signs. He was referred for diagnostic procedures, including an MRI scan, PICC line insertion, and a lumbar puncture, with plans to transfer him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States the following day. However, less than 24 hours after arriving at Euracare, he was dead.

Adichie narrated that a short time later, Dr. M came out and told her that Nkanu had been given too much propofol by the anesthesiologist, and had become unresponsive and was quickly resuscitated. But suddenly, Nkanu was on a ventilator. He was intubated and placed in the ICU.

The next thing she heard was that Nkanu had seizures. A cardiac arrest. All these had never happened before. Some hours later, Nkanu was gone.

The mourning parent later concluded that Nkanu was never monitored after being given too much propofol. The anesthesiologist had just casually carried Nkanu on his shoulder to the theatre. So, nobody knows when exactly Nkanu became unresponsive.

The Three Doctors Suspended and What They Are Now Claiming

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria suspended Dr Tunde Majekodunmi, Medical Director of Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, Dr Titus Ogundare, an anesthesiologist at the Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, and Dr Atinuke Uwajeh, Chief Medical Officer at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital. These suspensions were because of the medical negligence in the treatment of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.

These doctors have demanded public apology and reversal of their suspension as they accused the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel of prejudging the case and misapplying the code of Medical Ethics.
