At 12:10 am on May 28, a weird tragedy occurred, which is the Utumishi girls fire 2026, leading to the death of sixteen students, and about nine suspects were detained.
According to the result of the interrogations with the suspects, the Utumishi girls fire 2026 started as over five students walked in quietly.
These girls know where they were going and what they want to do, while most of the students were asleep. Due to a strict interrogation process, these suspected girls revealed that the fire started after they lighted a mattress at the dormitory’s exit using a matchstick and paraffin in their hands.
The motive behind their actions hasn’t been revealed yet. However, their actions led to the killing of sixteen students.

What Happened Inside That Dormitory of Utumishi Girls Fire 2026
The Utumishi girls fire 2026 escalated around 12:45 am on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at the Meline Waithera Dormitory of Utumishi Girls Academy Senior School in Gilgil, Nakuru. According to the investigations so far, it was discovered that the burnt dormitory was locked at an earlier time of operation which hindered students from escaping when the fire started.
After the mattresses at the dormitory’s exit were lit, thick smoke and flames rapidly spread through the upper floor of the two-storey dormitory.
Students began waking up in panic as they screamed for help. Many students rushed toward the main exit, but the emergency doors on the upper floor were locked. As a result of this, some students died from suffocation due to smoke inhalation while trying to reach the exits, and others jumped from the upper-floor windows, resulting in serious injuries.
What the CCTV Footage Showed Investigators
The CCTV footage shows that the whole drama began around 12:10 am, when about 5 to 8 girls entered the Meline Waithera Block dormitory while over 220 students were asleep. They moved calmly through the hallway.

The girls stopped at Cube 11, then moved to an area where mattresses were stored. They gathered the mattresses altogether, then poured paraffin on them and used the lighter in their hands to light the mattresses.
Thereafter, they walk away innocently towards the exit door after starting the fire.
A thorough forensic analysis was carried out by the DCI over the CCTV footage at the Forensic Imaging and Acoustic Laboratory within the National Police Service Forensics Laboratory.
The process positively identified seven of the students who participated in the arson before escaping the scene.
Why Did Students Burn Utumishi Girls Academy
1. The Exam Date Was Moved Forward Two Weeks Without Warning
The students told detectives they were angry that the examination timetable had been moved from June 16 to June 2, a shift of two weeks that added to their anger.
The sudden change sparked worries among the Form Four students because they are not well prepared for that time range.
2. A Disputed Fee for a Cultural Event Nobody Asked For
The students also resisted paying for a planned cultural event and pointed to the introduction of the fee as a source of resentment toward the school administration that had been building in the days before the fire.

3. A neighbouring boys’ school went on Strike and Showed Them It Could Be Done
The interrogation with the suspects revealed that the Utumishi girls fire 2026 was actually a peer influence from a neighbouring boys school. The detectives in charge of the case believe that many more people are involved in this scenario, which means they have an external support.
Final Thoughts on the Utumishi girls fire 2026
This is not the first time Kenya has buried students after a school fire. Records have it that 67 lives were buried at Kyanguli Mixed Secondary School on March 26 2001.
In 2017, ten students died in an arson attack at Moi Girls High School in Nairobi. In September 2024 at least 21 boys died in the Endarasha Academy fire. Now, it’s the Utumishi girls fire 2026.

The nine suspects of the Utumishi girls fire 2026 appeared at Naivasha Law Court on June 2, where the prosecution requested that they detain the suspects for 30 days to allow a depth investigation into the matter.
The state acknowledges that the public is fully interested in this case. If this is not well handled by the judicial system, it will continue to occur just as it has been occurring so far.
