Suspected repentant bandits killed Kaduna soldiers when they were on a rescue mission. One of the relatives of these soldiers reached out to SaharaReporters to relate the deaths of the soldiers through a WhatsApp message, provided the army has not officially announced the incident.
The repentant bandits attacked these soldiers along the Kaduna–Birnin Gwari axis, which is between Chikun and Igabi Local Government Areas, near Rigachiku community. These repentant bandits killed Kaduna soldiers, including one Lieutenant, seven other ranks, and a senior military officer reported injured.
The delay in the official announcement from the army has left the relatives in worry and shows a sign of a communication crisis of the Nigerian security crisis.
What Happened and Why It Has Shocked the Entire Country
On Monday, June 9, 2026, repentant bandits killed Kaduna Soldiers who were on a routine patrol and clearance operation in Kaduna State. The bandits used sophisticated tactics and heavy firepower to make their attack a successful one.
There were record 8 soldiers who died as a result of the incidents and some were brutally injured, however they are already on treatment.
This incident shocked the entire country because the attackers were allegedly members of bandit groups that had surrendered and benefited from the Kaduna State Amnesty/Rehabilitation Program under Governor Uba Sani. As repentant bandits killed Kaduna soldiers, many Nigerians concluded that the amnesty program is a failed strategy. It gives criminals time to rest, rearm, and return stronger.

Kaduna State is in the North-West, not the traditional North-East insurgency zone. The fact that this level of boldness is happening closer to the center of the country has heightened fears that banditry is spreading and has become a challenge to the Nigerian military and the state.
This happened just days after the successful rescue of 360 Boko Haram hostages in Borno State. Many Nigerians expected effective fight against insecurity, but this ambush felt like a slap in the face and proof that the problem is far from being solved.
What Are Repentant Bandits and Why Is the Government Giving Them Amnesty
Repentant bandits are members of bandit groups who have surrendered their weapons to the government, never to return to bandit activities. They are called repentant because they publicly declared that they are no longer involved in banditry activities.
After they surrendered, they go through an amnesty program to influence their mindset and behaviors with the masses. Sometimes government even provide them with money, houses, or jobs as part of reintegration.
The essence and motivation for the amnesty program by the government is to successfully fight banditry activities by providing economic alternatives to encourage bandits from returning to crime, and encourage more bandits to surrender as high-prolific bandits surrendered.
Final Thoughts as Repentant Bandits Killed Kaduna Soldiers
The latest attack raised concerns over the effectiveness of the government’s strategy for tackling insecurity in Kaduna State. The incident also comes amid growing concerns over what people describe as a reduction in media reporting banditry and other security-related incidents in the state. This sends a bad signal to the masses that the silence surrounding these attacks is itself part of a pattern that makes accountability difficult.
Eight soldiers are dead. Their families found out through WhatsApp. The men who killed them were known as repentant bandits. The army has not officially spoken. And somewhere in Kaduna the same armed group that the government pardoned is planning its next move. That is not a security policy. That is a security failure.
