There was a lot of drama at the ADC convention on Sunday. The ADC, which means the African Democratic Congress. This is a political party that was founded originally in 2005 and known as Alliance for Democratic Change; however, it was rebranded late in 2025.
The new team at first began with great stakeholders and godfathers in Nigerian politics coming together to unitedly fight the hardship of the economy through the 2027 general election. But as the 2027 general election draws near, the party begins to get messier.

The ADC has two faction which are the Kachikwu faction and the David Mark faction. These factions have their different flagbearer for the party for 2027 general election.
So, on Sunday being 24th May 2026, the faction of Kachikwu organized a convention in Abuja, and then just like that, it was announced that Dumebi Kachikwu emerged as the Presidential Candidate of the ADC. This faction of ADC dissolved the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) and quickly constituted a new national working committee according to the party’s 2018 amended constitution before the announcement that Dumebi Kachikwu Emerges as Presidential Candidate of the ADC.
Who Is Dumebi Kachikwu and Why Is He Running Again
Dumebi Kachikwu is not a newbie in the political system. He contested in the 2023 general election. He was the flagbearer of ADC in 2023.
He is from Delta state. According to some reports, Dumebi Kachikwu was suspended from ADC before the 2023 election, but his name remained on the ballot as it was too late to substitute.

The David Mark Faction and Why This Split Matters
The David Mark faction actually wanted the process of the nationwide ward primaries. Their candidates are Atiku Abubakar, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. The process of the Nationwide direct ward primaries has commenced already and the collation of results is ongoing.
The David Mark faction is the recognized faction by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). These split matters because it determines how well the party is going to the other opposition party in the 2027 general election. The opposition faction, which is the David Mark faction, actually adopted the ADC as its platform and made David Mark the interim chairman earlier in 2026.
What This Means for the 2027 Opposition
Few weeks ago, there was a trending video of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu speaking about the division within the party. The president actually spoke in parables and idioms.
This means that the division and internal fight in the party signifies weakness to their major opposition party, which is the APC. A house divided against itself cannot stand.
