The face of Maria Avila, who is the former housekeeper of Chris Brown, was permanently disfigured by a dog she had no reason to fear.
She was working at his property doing her job when the Rottweiler attacked her and left her with permanent facial disfigurement. She went to court which led to Chris Brown Court Ruling and she won close to $13 million.
There were also some additional awards that went to her family including about $885,000 to her sister Patricia Avila who was present for emotional distress, and $50,000 to Maria’s husband, Oscar Olivo.
Chris Brown Court Ruling 2026 Ends a Six-Year Fight Over a 200-Pound Guard Dog Named Hades
In December 2020, at Brown’s home in Tarzana, California, Maria Avila was attacked by a 200-pound Caucasian Shepherd named Hades while taking out trash. The dog was kept for security, not as a personal pet, according to Brown.
According to testimony reported by Rolling Stone, the dog ripped off large chunks of her skin thereby leaving her with permanent facial disfigurement, scarring on her face and left arm, vision loss, and nerve damage. Surgeons later grafted skin from her abdomen to repair her arm. She also developed PTSD and had long-term work difficulties.
Maria and her sister Patricia sued Brown and his company, Black Pyramid LLC for negligence. The case involved claims about inadequate control of the security dog. After a two-week civil trial in Los Angeles, a jury ruled in favor of the plaintiffs around July 1, 2026 which is Chris Brown court ruling.
Brown was found liable and must pay $12.9 million to former housekeeper Maria Avila for negligence. Her sister, Patricia Avila, who was working alongside her when the attack happened, was separately awarded $885,000 for emotional distress, and Maria’s husband, Oscar Olivo, received an additional $50,000 which brings Brown’s total liability to nearly $13 million.
This civil judgment ends the fight over damages from the incident. It doesn’t appear to involve criminal charges related to this specific case.
Brown’s Defence and Why the Jury Didn’t Buy It
Brown had already admitted some blames before the trial began but he testified that he warned Avila and her sister the dogs on the property were absolutely not friendly and they should not to go into the backyard alone and if there be need for it, they should that with security present.
However, both housekeepers denied ever having that conversation, and their attorneys noted that language differences would have made such a warning not to likely have occurred as described.
Brown testified he was about to shower when he heard the dog growling, rushed downstairs, and found Avila motionless amid a lot of blood. He said the sight left him in shock, and that he followed his manager’s advice to leave the scene before first responders arrived.
He said he had a staff member call 911 instead of doing it himself. He was afraid of media scandal or misleading story from any recording of his voice. He reportedly left the scene and drove around for hours which portrayed a lack of responsibility and hurt his credibility.
Final Thoughts Regarding Chris Brown Court Ruling
This is not Brown’s only case in court right now. The Chris Brown court ruling landed four days after Brown began a co-headlining stadium tour with Usher across the US this summer, including two nights at SoFi Stadium in September.
Aside that, Brown is scheduled to stand trial in London in October 2026 over an alleged unprovoked bottle attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a nightclub in 2023. He appeared briefly in a UK court in January 2026 alongside a co-defendant and was granted bail which allows the US tour to proceed.
