During the Press Conference at Army Headquarters, Abuja, the Chief of Policy and Plans in person of Major General Bamidele Alabi read from a prepared statement on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff,Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu ahead of the 2026 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL).
The statement was emphasized on Nigerian Army Recruitment in 2026 targeting 28,000 new soldiers. These are additional soldiers the Nigerian Army plans to recruit and train. This number says more about the state of Nigeria’s security than any government press release ever could.
The Nigerian army recruitment aims to boost manpower, expand operational capacity, improve response times, and address threats like banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality across the country.

To make the Nigerian army recruitment effective, there is expansion in the recruitment scope as another training depot is being established at Amasiri Edda which makes it the third institution to train able-bodied civilians for the Nigerian Army thereby enhancing our manpower.
What Is the Amasiri Edda Training Depot and Why Does It Matter
The Amasiri-Edda Training Depot which is formally known as Depot Nigerian Army Amasiri-Edda, is a newly established Nigerian Army recruitment training facility located in Amasiri and Edda communities, Ebonyi State.
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) said the establishment of the new facility significantly expanded the service’s training capacity, providing the ability to absorb and train thousands of additional personnel needed to reinforce ongoing military operations nationwide.
The project involved close collaboration with Ebonyi State. It is expected to bring economic benefits which include jobs, infrastructure, local contracts, and improve stability through better civil-military ties.
Why Is Nigerian Army Expanding Its Manpower Right Now
Nigeria’s active military strength is around 230,000 which is one of Africa’s largest, but the country’s population which over 200 million and geography make it challenging to secure everywhere effectively.
According to the COAS, the Service was simultaneously expanding its force structure to improve deployment strategies and leverage on modern technology so as to confront Nigeria’s evolving security threats.
Beyond increasing personnel strength, the COAS said the Nigerian Army has continued to establish additional brigades and units while constantly reviewing its force structure to address identified operational gaps and respond more effectively to emerging security challenges nationwide.
He emphasized that troops are actively engaged in multiple theatres of operation and have continued to degrade the capabilities of Boko Haram, ISWAP, armed bandits, kidnappers, separatist groups, and other violent criminal networks.
What Is NADCEL 2026 and What Activities Are Planned
NADCEL 2026 is an abbreviation for Nigerian Army Day Celebration 2026. It is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Nigerian Army, marking its 163rd anniversary in 2026.

The week-long Nigerian Army Day Celebration will begin on July 1 and the grand finale on July 6 2026 with activities including Jumat prayers and interdenominational church services across Army formations, public speaking engagements in secondary schools nationwide, the NADCEL Lecture, the Chief of Army Staff Literary Competition Award Ceremony, a media interaction with senior journalists, and the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) Charity Outreach Programme in Port Harcourt.
Final Thoughts on the Nigerian Army Recruitment
The Nigerian Army is 163 years old this year. It has fought a civil war, multiple insurgencies and is now battling bandits who do TikTok giveaways and kidnappers who take children from schools.
The Nigerian Army plans to recruit and train an additional 28,000 personnel as part of their efforts to strengthen ongoing operations against insecurity across the country is a credible effort.
