Why Is Niamey Airport Attacked Twice in 2026

The Niger airport attacked has occurred twice in 2026. The first occurrence was on January 29, 2026 and the second attack was on June 18, 2026.

Niamey’s airport is one of the country’s most strategic military sites. It hosts the G5 Sahel counterterrorism force, Russian forces, and the drone unit carrying out strikes against rebel groups. Uranium stocks that Niger is seeking to sell are also stored at the airport. Any strike on those facilities could pose a serious environmental risk.

The Niamey’s airport symbolizes the state power in the capital. So, attacking it shows jihadist reach and challenges the junta’s control. Attacks on such high-profile targets generate propaganda value, boost recruitment, and pressure the government.

The 1000 Tons of Uranium at the Airport Nobody Is Talking About

1000 tons of Uranium are also stored in the warehouses at the Niamey airport. The 1000 tons of concentrated uranium oxide which is commonly known as yellowcake because of its colour extracted from the Arlit mine by the French company, Orano.

This is the subject of a dispute between the French company and the military junta after they latter seized it. The nuclear cargo was to be purchased by a Russian company after being transported overland to the port of Lomé in Togo which is a route that involved crossing areas controlled by jihadist groups.

Final Thoughts on Niger Airport Attack

Th Niger airport attack shows how dramatic the security situation in the Sahel has deteriorated and how hollow the junta’s security guarantees have become. Niger has been ruled for three years by a military junta which has struggled to manage the jihadist violence that has really disturbed the West African country for a decade.
